150 Medical Colleges May Lose Recognition, 40 Already Penalised: Sources

Around 150 medical colleges of the country are likely to lose recognition of the National Medical Commission -- the regulatory body for country's medical education and medical professionals -- for inadequate faculty and non-compliance of rules, sources have said. Already, 40 medical colleges across the country have lost recognition and must show to the NMC that they are following set standards.

The list of colleges on the NMC's radar includes medical colleges in Gujarat, Assam, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu, Punjab, Andhra Pradesh, Tripura and West Bengal, sources said.

The deficiencies were revealed during an inspection carried out by the Undergraduate Medical Education Board of the Commission for over a month, in which they looked into CCTV cameras, lapses in Aadhar linked biometric attendance procedures and the faculty rolls.

Sources said the colleges were not following the criteria, including proper camera installation and their functioning. Biometric facility was not working properly. Many posts in the faculties were also found vacant during the inspection.

The medical colleges have the option to appeal, sources said. The first appeal can be made at the NMC within 30 days. If the appeal is rejected, they can approach the Union Ministry of Health.

In December, Union health minister Mansukh Mandaviya had warned of action against medical colleges that do not stick to rules or maintain proper faculty. "We have to give quality education to students, we have to produce good doctors," he had said.

Derecognition of 150 institutions could trigger a crisis for the country, where the number of medical colleges and seats for medical students have been inadequate for decades.

According to the official data released by the Central government, the number of medical colleges has been increased almost twice since 2014.

In 2014, there were 387 medical colleges in the country. In 2023, the number has increased to 660. Twenty-two of them are All India Institutes of Medical Sciences, up from seven in 2014, reported news agency ANI.

The number of post-graduation seats also got a boost. There is a total of 65,335 post-graduate seats -- more than double what was in 2014, data shows. There were 31,185 post-graduate medical seats in 2014. The number of MBBS seats is 1,01,043 – up from 51,348 in 2014.

But derecognition for 150 medical colleges could bring down the number of medical colleges by almost a quarter.

In March, the Gujarat government told the state's legislative assembly that data till December showed that more than 1,900 posts are lying vacant at the state's government-run medical colleges and hospitals.

Amid Wrestlers' Protests, World Sport Body Has A Request And A Warning

Wrestling Federation of India assistant secretary Vinod Tomar is also named in the FIR

New Delhi:

Amid the continuing protest by the country's top wrestlers against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who they have accused of sexual harassment, the United World Wrestling (UWW) has issued a statement condemning the detention of wrestlers during a march to the new Parliament building on Sunday.

UWW has also expressed 'disappointment over the lack of results of the investigations" against the federation chief and threatened to suspend the federation if its elections are not held within 45 days.

"UWW firmly condemns the treatment and detention of the wrestlers. It expresses its disappointment over the lack of results of the investigations so far. UWW urges the relevant authorities to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation into the allegations," the world wrestling body said in a statement.

"UWW will request further information about the next elective general assembly from the 10A and the Ad-hoc Committee of the WFI. The 45-day deadline that was initially set to hold this elective assembly shall be respected. Failing to do so may lead UWW to suspend the federation, thereby forcing the athletes to compete under a neutral flag. It is reminded that UWW already took a measure in this situation by reallocating the Asian Championship planned in New Delhi earlier this year," it added.

"For several months, United World Wrestling has followed with great concern the situation in India where wrestlers are protesting over allegations of abuse and harassment by the President of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI). It has taken due note that the WFI President has been put aside at an early stage and is currently not in charge," UWW stated further.

"As it has already done since the beginning of this situation, UWW will hold a meeting with the wrestlers to inquire about their condition and safety and reconfirm our support for a fair and just resolution of their concerns," it added.

Meanwhile, the protesting wrestlers on Tuesday gathered at Haridwar to immerse their medals in the Ganga as a mark of protest against the federation chief.

However, they decided to push back their plan to consign their laurels to the waters and issued a five-day ultimatum instead to the Centre to act on their demand following talks with farmer leader Naresh Tikait.

The wrestlers were trying to march towards the new Parliament building from their protest site near the Jantar Mantar Sunday when they were stopped and detained by Delhi Police personnel.

The wrestlers wanted to hold a 'maha panchayat' in front of the new Parliament building in a bid to build support for their cause.

Following the police crackdown, ace wrestler Vinesh Phogat, who is spearheading the protest, said, "While we were not allowed to march to the new Parliament and were detained, Brij Bhushan is sitting there."

Earlier, on April 24, the Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports announced that the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) will form an ad hoc committee to conduct the elections to the Executive Committee of the Wrestling Federation of India within 45 days of its formation, and to manage day-to-day affairs of the body, including the selection of athletes and making entries for the participation of players in international events. This committee will be functioning for an interim period till a new Executive Committee takes charge, the ministry said.

After prominent wrestlers came forward with allegations of sexual harassment against the WFI chief, earlier this year, Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur announced the formation of an oversight committee to probe allegations charges against him and some coaches.

Wrestling Federation of India assistant secretary Vinod Tomar is also named as an accused in the FIR filed in the matter.

The movement has gained traction, with leading Opposition leaders visiting the grapplers at the protest site and voicing support.
